Russian imports of sugar in January-August 2017, and other news, Sept 01, 2017

RUSSIA

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, as of August 31, 2017, the country has harvested sugar beet from the area of 105.3 thousand hectares, or 8.8% of the area sown (in 2016 - 93.0 thousand hectares).

According to Sugar.ru rail cargo monitoring data, Russia imported 163 652 MT of sugar in January - August 2017. The largest exporting countries to Russia were Belarus (95.28%) and Lithuania (4.49%). Russian sugar exports amounted to 229,475 MT, the main recipient countries were Kazakhstan (47.47%) and Azerbaijan (29.78%).

Domestic shipments amounted to 1 015 177 MT, the largest volume of shipments was made by Kirsanovsky (Kristall) (5.31%) and Cheremnovsky (4.64%) sugar plants. The total transit of sugar by Russian rail has made 131 933 MT.

BELARUS

Gorodeysky sugar plant started processing sugar beet of a new crop on August 30, Soyuzrossahar reports. In the coming days it is planned to launch the Skidel, Slutsk and Zhabinka plants.

UKRAINE

The minimum sugar prices will rise to reach 9,172.57 Hryvna per ton (20,883.19 rubles/ton) from September 1, 2017 to September 1, 2018, as approved by the Cabinet of Ministers. The minimum price for sugar beet will be 633.10 Hryvna per ton (1441.37 rubles/ton). Last MY (since September 1, 2016) the prices were 9078.87 and 616.99 Hryvna per ton (20669.86 and 1404.7 rubles/ton), respectively. The same decree defines the maximum size of the quota for sugar production for the domestic market in the period from September 1, 2017 to September 1, 2018 in the amount of 1.640 million tons.

Farmers in Zhitomir region started to harvest sugar beets with 3,600 tons already harvested at average yields of 48.0 MT/hectare, the regional administration reports.

ARMENIA

In July 2017 Armenia imported 117.85 tons of sugar and raw sugar (HS Code of Economic Activities 1701) for $ 77.57 thousand; and 77,36 tons of other sugars (HS Code 1702) for the amount of $ 44.49 thousand and 1035.71 tons of molasses (HS Code 1703) for $ 196.78 thousand, according to the National Statistics Committee.
