The wholesale price of sugar began to grow rapidly this week boosted earlier by the previous week. The largest companies consistently raised prices, and heated the market so that on Wednesday and Thursday (January 24-25, 2018), supply prices from companies were changing throughout the day. Strategically this is affected by a lowered forecast for sugar beet production and a continuing record export of white sugar, tactically - the absence of rail cars for the shipment of sugar and the temporary withdrawal of a number of companies from the market, including such large companies as Rusagro. However, due to the increase in prices, some of these companies are returning to the market (for example, Pokrovsky), which reduces the likelihood of further price increases.
According to the railway monitoring data by Sugar.Ru, after a lull on the New Year holidays, Russian exports began to recover. In 25 days of January, total 57 thousand tons of white sugar were shipped for export by rail, of which 40 thousand tons went to Uzbekistan. The import of white sugar has also increased, so, if in December the import by rail was 18.9 thousand tons, then in 25 days of January it has reached 22.8 thousand tons already – most of which emerges from Belarus. A significant share of the CIS market is taken from Russia by Belarus and Ukraine, which deliver 20-25 thousand tons a month to Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan. Since the beginning of January, Ukraine has supplied 15 thousand tons to Uzbekistan only by the Russian rail.
Large volumes of raw sugar continue to flow to Kazakhstan, which has already received 157 thousand tons of raw sugar in the new sugar season before January 1, and now expects two more steamers with a total tonnage of 66.5 thousand tons.
