BELARUS

By October 24, 2019, sugar beet was harvested from an area of 71.3 thousand hectares or 76.6% of the area sown (in 2018 - 75.7 thousand hectares), Sugar.Ru was informed in the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Belarus. About 3487.2 thousand MT (in 2018 - 3472.5 thousand MT) of beets were collected, with an average yield of 48.88 MT/ha (in 2018 – 45.87 MT/ha). The sugar content in beet in the republic is 16.74% versus 16.84% for the same date last year.

MOLDOVA

The Falesti sugar factory of Sudzucker Moldova will be mothballed while maintaining all production capacities in a standby mode and ready for operation. The planned conservation period is until April 2021, according to SudzuckerMoldova. The decision on conservation was made due to a sharp decline in sales of Moldavian sugar, primarily in the domestic market. According to expert estimates, over the past year, tens of thousands of tons of smuggled sugar have entered the Moldovan market, the bulk of which is sold in small wholesale and retail by trade patent holders. The current crisis situation is also aggravated by anticompetitive actions provoked by the assistance from the Polish state to the second sugar producer, the Moldovan-Polish company Moldova Zahar through various financial instruments and governmental support measures.
