Sugar beet harvesting update from Russian and news from Moldova, Aug 26, 2019

RUSSIA

As of August 23, 2019, sugar beet was harvested from an area of 59.1 thousand ha or 5.2% of the crop acreage (in 2018 - 37.8 thousand ha), total volume of beet collected makes 2.5 million tons (in 2018 – 1.3 million tons) with an average yield of 43.04 MT/ha (in 2018 – 33.36 MT/ha), the Ministry of Agriculture reports.

In Stavropol Territory, local farmers have harvested 234.6 thousand tons of sugar beets from an area of 5.5 thousand hectares, the average yield makes 42.29 MT/ha, as of August 23,. From the beginning of the harvesting season, Stavropolsahar OJSC (Izobilnensky sugar plant) has received 51.7 thousand tons of beets including 43.3 thousand tons processed to date, average sucrose content makes 16%. In Bashkiria, farmers have started harvesting sugar beets, according to regional agriculture authorities.

Total 50 thousand tons of sugar beets have already been delivered to the Cheremnovsky sugar factory for processing, the Altai Territory administration reports. It is expected that in the coming season the volume of sugar beet processed at the plant will exceed one million tons.

MOLDOVA

Local farmers have started harvesting sugar beets two weeks earlier than usual, the local press writes. It is reported that drought may affect the quality of beets otherwise. In 2019, total 16 thousand hectares were planted with sugar beet, which is four thousand ha less than in 2018.
