Sugar price monitoring from Russia and sugar imports data from Georgia in March 2018

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, as of April 25, 2018, sugar beet was sown on an area of 359.3 thousand hectares or 32.8% of the forecast (in 2017 – 645.8 thousand hectares).

According to price monitoring data for the period from 19.04.2018 to 26.04.2018 the US dollar rate increased by 0.3% (on 19.04 - RUR 61.55/$, on 26.04 - RUR 61.75/$). Ruble Moscow wholesale price for sugar increased by 0.20 RUR/kg (+0.61%), Krasnodar wholesale price has not changed and is fluctuating around 31.20 RUR/kg. US dollar Moscow wholesale price for sugar increased by $0,001 /kg (+0.19%), Krasnodar wholesale price dropped by $0.002 /kg (-0.39%).

There has been no qualitative change in the wholesale prices of sugar over the past week, they continued to remain in the range of 31-32 rubles per kilogram. Large companies formally declare prices of 32-33 rubles per kilogram, but are ready to reduce the price to 31 rubles per kilogram.

Driven by rising prices for Russian sugar and a drop in world prices, exports continue to decline. In 26 days of April only 16 thousand tons of white sugar were exported via the Russian rail, exports to Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan are absent. For comparison sake, last April the Russian Federation exported 50 thousand tons of white sugar by rail. The transit of Ukrainian and Belarusian sugar to Azerbaijan and to the countries of Central Asia remains stable, since the beginning of April total 37.5 thousand tons have been delivered there (in March – 45.9 thousand tons, in February – 24.8 thousand tons).

The pace of sugar beet sowing lags behind last year figures, however, the total crop acreage in the SFD (the Southern Federal District has completed the sowing campaign) is 3.5% higher than last year.


According to the analysis of National Statistics Office of Georgia, conducted by, in March 2018 the import of sugar (HS code 1701) has made $3.1 million ($4.9 million in 2017). Totally in for January - March 2018 Georgia imported sugar for $11.7 million ($8.3 million in 2017). Export of sugar in January - March 2018 has made $0.0, total for 3 months 2018 - $106.8 (in 2017 - $1.4 thousand).
