Sugar production in Russia in 2017, and exports of white sugar from Ukraine for 11 months of 2017

Russia has produced a record volume of 6.7 million tons of sugar in 2017. As reported by Rosstat, the production volume has grown by 15.9% compared to 2016 production. In December 2017 (compared to December 2016) the production fell by 8.8%. The production of confectionery products last year was 3.7 million tons (+ 2.3% by 2016).


According to the analysis of data by the State Fiscal Service of Ukraine, conducted by, in 11 months (January-November) of 2017, export of white sugar (HS code 170199) amounted to 551.6 thousand tons, in November only - 66.7 thousand tons. In the same period Ukrainian white sugar was supplied to many countries: Sri Lanka (10.9%), Turkey (8%), Azerbaijan (7.85%), Sudan (7.24%), Libya (7.01%) etc. Export of other sugars (HS code 1702) amounted to 42.6 thousand tons, imports - 11.5 thousand tons, in November only - 1,129 tons. The main importers of other sugars from Ukraine are the Russian Federation (32%) and Nigeria (24%). Export of molasses (HS code 1703) amounted to 69.9 thousand tons, of which 46% went to Hungary, 33% - to Taiwan, etc. The volume of sugar beet pulp (HS code 230320) exported has made 80.1 thousand tons: Poland (28%), Spain (18%), the Republic of Korea (17.5%), etc.

According to the State Statistics Service of Ukraine, Ukraine produced 336 thousand tons of beet sugar in December 2017 (-45.5% to the previous month and + 2.0% to December 2016). The production of beet sugar in 2017 was 1980 thousand tons (+ 0.5% by 2016).

Taking into account the carryover stock, the total supply of Ukrainian sugar at the beginning of January is estimated at 2,243,000 tons. Domestic consumption in September-December is estimated at 462 thousand tons this marketing season. In 4 months of current marketing season, 173,000 tons of sugar were exported (almost 50% less than the corresponding period in 2016), according to the balances of the Economic Discussion Club.
