According to the Ministry of Agriculture, by May 11, 2017, sugar beet (factory) was sown at an area of 1092.2 thousand hectares or 96.7% of the forecast (in 2016 - 989.5 thousand hectares).

Loss of sugar beet as a result of frosts can play a positive role, given the surplus of sugar production in 2016/17 MY, and an increase in acreage for the following year. The second year with such yield and volume of production could bring down prices and even lead to bankruptcy of a number of sugar companies. Re-sowing of sugar beet will not only lead to additional costs for new seeds (up to € 100/ha for elite seeds, like Strube and Betaseed, and the same cost for seeding operation), but also reduce the yield and sugar content of beets – the losses due to late beet development could not be compensated by late harvesting. But the bonuses from the possible reduction of the harvest and, accordingly, the increase in the price of sugar, will not be received by all, the winners will be companies that were not affected by the freezing.

BELARUS

As of May 12, 2017, 95.9 thousand hectares of sugar beet were sown in the Republic of Belarus (99.8% of the plan), the Ministry of Agriculture and Food of Belarus informs.
