RUSSIA
According to the Ministry of Agriculture, sugar beet was sown at an area of 920.5 thousand hectares by May 3, 2017 which makes 81.5% of the forecast (in 2016 - 810.4 thousand ha).

Farmers of the Altai Territory are beginning to sow sugar beet, the regional Ministry of Agriculture reports.

According to Sugar.ru price monitoring for the period from April 27, 2017 to May 4, 2017, the US dollar rate went up by 1.4% (the rate was on April 27 - 56.31 RUR/$; on May 04 - 57.09 RUR/$). The ruble Moscow wholesale price for sugar did not change, remaining at the level of 34.20 RUR/kg, the Krasnodar wholesale price remained unchanged as well, remaining at the level of 32.50 RUR/kg. US dollar wholesale Moscow sugar price fell by $0.008/kg (-1.32%), the wholesale Krasnodar price dropped by $0.008/kg (-1.39%).
Prices in the market continue to remain stable. The main player, Prodimex, keeps them at RUR 32.5, the rest of the companies are not eager to start a price war. Rusagro and Dominant actually refused to trade in the open market, declaring obviously high prices. Demand is weak in anticipation of the "falling prices", the secondary companies do not take large amounts, being content with current needs.
According to the rail cargo monitoring data by Sugar.ru, in January-April 2017 Russia imported 90 121 MT of sugar. The largest exporting countries to Russia were Belarus (96.18%) and Lithuania (3.67%). Russian exports amounted to 150 359 MT, the main receivers are Kazakhstan (40.37%) and Azerbaijan (32.45%). However, over the past 2 weeks, Russian sugar exports have slowed, perhaps because of a consistently low ruble exchange rate and a drop in world sugar prices.
Domestic shipments of sugar by rail amounted to 504,868 MT for 4 months, the largest volume of shipments was made by Kirsanovsky (Kristall) sugar plant (6.36%) and Cheremnovsky sugar plant (5.36%). The total transit by rail through the territory of Russia was 33 910 MT.
ARMENIA
Armenia imported 30.7 thousand tons of sugar and raw sugar (HS Code 1701) for $ 15 568 thousand; and 31 tons of other sugars (HS Code 1702) for $ 33 thousand in March 2017, reports the National Statistical Committee.
KAZAKHSTAN
Kazakhstan began to sow sugar beet. By May 2, 2017 agrarians of Zhambyl oblast have planted 1600 hectares (a plan is 6 thousand hectares), the Akimat of Zhambyl region reports.
UKRAINE
As of May 3, total 302 thousand hectares or 103% of the forecast (plan 293 thousand hectares) were sown, according to the Ministry of Agrarian Policy of Ukraine.

According to the analysis of the State Fiscal Service of Ukraine, conducted by Sugar.Ru, during the 4 months (January-April) of 2017, sugar exports (HS code of 1701) amounted to 339.6 thousand tons in the amount of $ 167,382 thousand. Exports of other sugars (HS code 1702) made 14.3 thousand tons for the amount of $ 4 671 thousand. The maximum import of sugar in fiscal terms came from Denmark (20.86%), the maximum export went to Sri Lanka (11.68%)
