RUSSIA

Imports of sugar from non-CIS countries has reached US$ 16.6 million in May 2016, according to the Federal Customs Service of Russian Federation.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, as of May 30, 2016, raw sugar processing came to a halt. The wholesale price for sugar increased by 0.8%, retail - decreased by 0.1% in the period May 24 to 30, 2016. According to the Russian Union of sugar producers, the country has processed 172 900 MT of raw sugar from January 2016 (2.4 times less than in the same period of 2015), and has produced 169 400 MT of refined white sugar (1.9 times less compared to the same period of 2015).

According to the rail cargo monitoring data in the period January - May 2016, Russia has imported 124 137 MT of sugar. The major countries exporting sugar to Russia are Belarus (98.77%) and Poland (0.70%). Russian exports amounted to 2,331 MT, the major countries – recipients of sugar are Kazakhstan (72.25%) and Mongolia (11.45%).

Domestic shipments have totalled 543 478 MT, the largest volume of dispatches was made by Kirsanovsky sugar refinery “Crystal” (5.92%) and Elan-Kolenovsky sugar refinery (4.93%). The total transit of sugar by rail through Russia has made 42 302 MT.

UKRAINE

Firm "Biogazinvest" of Kyiv region has acquired Palmyra sugar refinery (Cherkassy region), and plans to build a biogas plant at same place instead, according to Ukrtsukor. The factory was owned agro-holding "Kernel" and was the largest producer of sugar in Cherkassy region. However, in 2013 it was preserved and put up for sale. "Biogazinvest" plans to launch here biogas plant in three years. The projected operational capacity will be 6 MWt of electricity; the facility will operated by 56 people.
